Foundations
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalms 11:3)
For some time, inexplicably, my mind has, on a regular basis, returned over and over again to the word “foundation.” Today I was drawn to these words found in the 11th Psalm where David addressed hopelessness that would occur to the righteous should their “foundations” be destroyed.
This short Psalm begins with the Psalmist declaring that his trust was “in the Lord,” and as a consequence of that foundational truth, he would not flee “like a bird flying to a mountain.” He readily admits the wicked of this earth wish for the utter destruction of the righteous, and they shoot their arrows in the darkness of their evil to destroy all that is good and holy. So much like today…yes today.
In verse 3, he talks about our “foundations” that they wish to destroy, leaving us helpless. The Hebrew word here for foundation is “shathah,” and it means “foundation, support, stay, and purpose.” It comes from a root word that literally has the meaning of “taking a stand” or being firmly grounded and unmovable.
Jesus said in (Matthew 7:24-25), “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
In (Matthew 16:18) Jesus said, “……upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” The Apostle Paul told the Ephesian Christians that we, followers of Christ Jesus, “are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” (Ephesians 2:20).
Paul told Timothy that Christians have “Laid up for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.” (I Timothy 6:19) Hard times are here….how firm is your foundation?
Now here’s the crux of the matter and the deadly danger of this hour. According to (Revelation 12:12), Satan is very aware that his time is short. John says in this chapter that he hears “a loud voice” in Heaven that warned the inhabitants of the earth that at the very end time, the devil would literally “come down among them,” and so he says, “Woe to the inhabitants of the earth.” I believe this time is upon us even now.
If you think for a moment that the perversion, gross immorality, destruction of moral fiber, calculated Anti-Christian laws, undermining of the home and Biblical parental roles, the genocidal mass slaughter of aborted children, and the phenomenon of “good being called evil, and evil being embraced as good, often under the pseudo cloak of diversity, and perverted unnatural choices, is just a change of the culture that occurs as a result of the regular flow of history, you are sadly mistaken. The enemy of the souls of mankind is trying to undermine the “foundations” of God’s creation as He casts aside the truth of Holy Scripture.
Biblical illiteracy is at an all-time high. Sunday School is sadly a historical footnote in much of Christendom. I often mention simple stories from the Bible, only to receive blank stares from listeners who have never read or heard the references from the Bible, for often, the teaching and preaching they hear is not from the Bible.
Satan is using his secular jackhammers often in the world of academia to our young people and is trying to attack our foundations. Only a Bible reading, Bible practicing, Bible-believing, praying, fasting, and spiritual people will be able to withstand the onslaught that’s coming against us as we approach the end of time and the Rapture of God’s righteous children.
Thankfully the following foundational truths are eternal and true in the midst of it all: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). And there’s this….. “In God I have put my trust: I will not be afraid what can man do unto me.” (Psalms 56:11) And here’s more hope…. “Fear not: they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” (II Kings 6:16)
Make sure your foundation is solid, my friends.
I leave you with these few words of an age-old hymn…….
” How Firm A Foundation”
“How firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word.
What more could He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus hath fled.
Fear not I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
When through deep waters I call you to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow.
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
And sanctify to you, your deepest distress.
When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie,
My grace all sufficient shall be your supply.
The flames will not hurt you; I only design,
Your dross to consume and your gold to refine.
The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not, desert to it’s foes;
That soul, that all hell should endeavor to shake;
I never, no never, no never forsake!”
