Most non-Catholics don’t have any idea about what the ‘Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’ is – and this name also doesn’t ring a bell with many members of the Church.

But call it by its original name, and nearly everyone will know it: the Holy Inquisition. It’s the oldest among the departments of the Roman Curia, founded to defend the Catholic Church from heresy – and is the body responsible for ‘promulgating and defending Catholic doctrine’.
