Virginia’s coast braces for severe flooding, as residents from Florida to the Carolinas survey the heavy damage caused by Hurricane Ian. Some remain stranded and thousands are still without power.

Kyiv officials indicated on Monday that Ukrainian forces have made new gains in the southern strategic region of Kherson after driving Russian troops out of the eastern city of Lyman over the weekend. Meanwhile, Russia employed drone strikes in the hometown of Ukrainian President Zelensky.

The Supreme Court opens its fall term today with a 6-3 conservative majority and a new justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

And, at least 125 were killed at a soccer game in Indonesia when police used tear gas to disperse a crowd, setting off a deadly stampede. Indonesian officials say they will open an independent investigation into the incident.
