The government is on track to shut down on Oct. 1, if Congress fails to pass a stopgap or budget by Sept. 30. The Biden administration pressed lawmakers last week to approve a $24 billion funding request to avoid a shutdown.

A U.S. official says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may soon meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as Russia seeks help replenishing artillery ammunition for the war in Ukraine.

And partygoers stranded for days at Burning Man were allowed to start leaving Monday afternoon after muddy roads dried up enough for them to begin their exodus from the northern Nevada desert. The festival had been closed to vehicles after more than a half-inch of rain fell Friday, causing flooding and foot-deep mud.
