A satanist inmate named TJ almost died in a knife fight, and when he came to, he asked the chaplain for a Bible, and Bibles Behind Bars was there to see he got it.

A few weeks ago, we sent a truckload of King James Bibles to the High Desert State Prison in Nevada, received by Chaplain Julio Calderin. Part of that shipment contained 100 Ruckman Reference Study Bibles, slated to be delivered to their men’s Bible study program at the prison. But God had other plans for one of those Bibles, something very unforeseen and quite wonderful.

“And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.” Luke 8:30 (KJB)

Chaplain Julio called me on Tuesday, first to say thank you to all the NTEB’ers who made it possible for the Bibles to be sent to his prison, and second, that he had something else to tell me as well. He told me about a prisoner, let’s call him TJ, and TJ is a hardcore satanist that most of the other inmates walk in fear of. Chap has had a burden to see him get saved for a long time. Well, TJ got involved in a violent prison yard brawl, and wound up with too many stab wounds to count, bleeding out in the yard. Doctors were fearful that they wouldn’t be able to save his life, but he pulled through. When he came out of surgery, he called for Chaplain Calderin. When Chap got to his bedside, TJ asked if he could be given a study Bible, and that he wanted to know where in there he could read about the forgiveness of God. Since we had just sent 100 study Bibles to High Desert, Chap was supplied and TJ was given the first one out of the box. Praise the LORD!!

Chaplain Calderin is scheduled to retire in a few months, and at the end of our call on Tuesday, he told me that he is rethinking retiring right now because there is more work to be done. That’s how powerfully TJ asking for that Bible affected Chap. Christian, this is the work we are called to do here, putting the Bible into the hands of as many people as possible, starting with the ‘least of these’, like TJ. Please pray that TJ’s request for the Bible will lead him to believe the gospel and get saved, and pray for Chap and the work God has called him to do there in High Desert State Prison.
